Jas Cartwright : A Retrospective

Many in the Cygnet and Channel area were saddened to learn of the death of Jas Cartwright on 24 February this year. Jas was well known, loved and respected by members of the artistic community having been a member of both the Life Drawing Group and the Portrait Group in Cygnet. Jas’ gentle, down to earth nature and calm demeanour endeared him to all who knew him. He was also a member of the Huon Art Exhibitions Group and his paintings, painstakingly done with coloured pencils on whatever he could get his hands upon, regularly graced the walls of the Lovett Gallery Cygnet.

When Jas’ family cleared his Kettering studio they found a wealth of sketch books, sketches and paintings which they have generously donated to the Huon Art Exhibitions Group to sell and raise money for a Jas Cartwright Memorial Student prize to be presented at next years annual exhibition in March in the Cygnet Town Hall.

The works will be on display in the Lovett Gallery Cygnet, rear of the Cygnet Town Hall, with an Opening on the evening of Friday 9 October and will remain there until Sunday 18 October. Anyone viewing the artworks will be invited to place a bid in a silent auction, which will close at 3pm Sunday 18th October. All single works are also available to view on the HAEG website below.

The portraits and life drawings will be available separately at a set price of $50 per piece and can be viewed at the Lovett Gallery Cygnet or on the website. Several local people have already been identified so if you have ever sat as a model for the Portrait Group or the Life Drawing Group come along and see if there is a drawing of yourself. You could have the opportunity to own one of Jas’ unique drawings.
